Kennebunk to Charleston

We had to drop tax documents off in Kennebunk last week. Our accountant's office in is the old Kesslon Shoe factory, which has now been renovated into offices and shops. I was happy to have a quiet hour to walk along the main street of our old home town.

I vacationed with my family in this area as a child, worked the summer hotels here as a college student, and raised my children in this town. Memories are everywhere I step.

Although businesses on Maine St. come and go, much of the architecture of the town remains as I remember it.

Some things are new . . . like this covered ice skating rink where the old Mobil station used to be.
It sure beats the little rink we used to make by flooding the back yard of our old house on Cat Mousam Road in the winter!

And I discovered "Camp Wool", a little shop on Main St. that's new to me. It's filled with wool in all its forms,  displayed with antiques, fiber books and supplies, penny rugs, patterns, and so much more.

There was so much to see (and feel!) . . .

that I ended up spending most of my hour there.

They even had a stash of roving for needle felting.
I bought a small bag of curly blond "hair" in case I decided to make a slightly wilder version of the

This photo doesn't do justice to the beautiful colors of the wool.
I loved the "fat quarters" displayed on vintage wooden shoe racks, probably originally from the now-closed shoe factory down the street.

These just make me want to make something . . .anything!

Tomorrow we're off to another of our favorite towns, Mt Pleasant, South Carolina.
We're flying down in search of Spring . . .
After this winter, I just want to see a flower!

This is our third trip to the Charleston area.
We love the low country . . .

The history, folk art, and flea markets . . .

The Gullah culture . . .

The live oaks dripping with Spanish moss . . .

And, of course, the outdoor bars and restaurants that line Shem Creek.

 They're open to people . . . and dogs!

Iced tea, She Crab soup, crab cakes and bbq shrimp  . . .

Maybe we really just vacation here for the seafood!

Kennebunk, Maine and Mt. Pleasant, South Carolina.
Two very different towns . . .
but I love them both!

Channeling Scarlett O'Hara,  I'm off! to Charleston!

  1. What a charming little town. I never been further east than North Carolina...someday we will take the teardrop trailer EVERYWHERE. Meanwhile the lunch looked really good. I am hungry for all of that right now. And pictures of giant old trees - I love that so much!

  3. Just joined your blog. I hope you stroll over and do the same at mine. Still growing it after all these years. I read your snow fall story and how you went to Charleston. A place I have never been but would love to visit some time. The break from the snow for you had to be awesome. I will be back hope to see you over at The Victorian Journey to join me.
    Hugs
